What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars located at the back of your mouth. They typically emerge between the ages of 16 to 24. Some people may have four wisdom teeth that erupt, while others may have fewer or none at all.

However, in certain instances, there is very little space for new teeth to erupt. This may lead to a condition called ‘impaction’, where the tooth grows out at an angle or doesn’t emerge fully past the gumline. If this occurs, the gum around the tooth becomes inflamed, painful, and possibly infected too.

Common Symptoms of Wisdom Tooth Infection

If you experience any of the following, then it’s likely that your wisdom tooth is getting infected and needs removal.

  • Pain and tenderness near the affected wisdom tooth
  • Redness or inflammation of the gums near the wisdom tooth
  • Swelling around the jaw and face
  • Difficulty opening your mouth or chewing
  • Foul taste or bad breath
  • Pus or discharge around the affected area
  • Headaches or earaches
  • Swollen lymph nodes around the neck
  • Cysts forming around the wisdom tooth
  • Fever

Wisdom tooth infections can worsen if left untreated. An early diagnosis and treatment are vital for your oral health.

Do I Really Need to Get
My Wisdom Tooth Extracted?

Wisdom teeth may not always require removal, but if you experience the above symptoms, we recommend scheduling a consultation with one of our dental professionals as soon as possible.

During this consultation, we will assess your oral health and how your teeth have developed. We may recommend wisdom tooth removal if you’re experiencing painful symptoms and after assessing the following:

An impacted wisdom tooth is a tooth that doesn’t have enough space to emerge or develop fully in the mouth. Since impacted wisdom teeth only partially erupt from the gums, this allows bacteria to enter your gums leading to a higher chance of infection. Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to various issues including pain, swelling, infection, damage to neighboring teeth, and discomfort while chewing. It is also very difficult to brush and maintain impacted teeth, so you’re likely to suffer from chronic tooth decay without wisdom tooth removal.

Since your wisdom teeth are located towards the back of your mouth, they may impact the adjacent teeth once they erupt. This can be extremely painful and cause infections. If wisdom tooth removal is delayed, it can lead to a domino effect of dental issue. As a result, you may end up needing to extract these adjacent teeth too. You may find it difficult to eat, speak or even carry out daily activities comfortably. To determine the best course of action, we will consider the impact on surrounding teeth and your overall oral health before recommending wisdom tooth removal.

Dental crowding refers to a condition where there is insufficient space in the jaw to accommodate all the teeth properly. Depending on the alignment of your wisdom tooth and the size of your mouth, wisdom teeth can take up a lot of space. This can cause dental crowding and damage adjacent teeth, jawbone and nerves. Tight spaces between teeth can make cleaning a challenge and dental crowding can also affect your bite, leading to problems like overbites or underbites. In such situations you may need orthodontic treatments to address these issues.

Pioneering Pain Minimisation
Techniques

At our dental practice, our principal dentist, Dr. Edward Lee, has adopted groundbreaking wisdom teeth removal techniques inspired by the renowned Dr. YoungSam Kim. These methods prioritise minimally invasive treatments, resulting in less pain and a quicker recovery for our patients.

Unlike traditional methods that involve extensive bone cutting and large incisions in the gums, Dr. Lee’s techniques aim to preserve as much bone and gum tissue as possible. Dr. Lee is also part of Dr. YoungSam Kim’s Teaching Faculty and played a significant role in translating his famous tooth extraction book into English. Our patients can trust that they’re in safe hands, providing them with the most advanced and comfortable dental care possible.

Our Wisdom Tooth
Removal Process

Our highly qualified dentists provide exceptional dental care, sleep dentistry options and cutting-edge techniques to make this a smooth and painless process for you. Here’s how your wisdom tooth removal will work at With U Dental:

Local anaesthetic/sleep dentistry techniques will be administered to minimise any pain and discomfort.

We utilise innovative techniques to minimise cutting of the bone when extracting the affected teeth. This ensures minimal bruising, significantly reduced pain and faster healing compared to the conventional techniques that involve a large amount of bone removal adjacent to the wisdom tooth.

We additionally offer Stem Cell Technology (CGF) to certain patients to help accelerate the healing process, reduce post-operative infection rates and minimise swelling/pain. This revolutionary procedure allows us to place stem cells (separated from your own blood) into the surgical site.

Stitches may be required to close the incision once the extraction is complete. We will use gauze to cover the wound and promote blood clotting. This will also help prevent a painful condition known as ‘dry socket’, where the blood clot either doesn’t form or gets dislodged during recovery.

Once the sedative wears off, you may have someone accompany you home. By this stage, you will be equipped with everything you need to know to keep your recovery on track.

Our highly trained and experienced dentists will be with you every step of the way to ensure you get relief from pain, recover smoothly and prevent future dental issues.

WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL AFTERCARE

Following wisdom tooth removal, you may experience some swelling, pain and bleeding. However, there’s nothing to worry about if you follow the post-operative care instructions our dental professionals provide. These include:

  • Taking pain medication as prescribed by the dentist
  • Rest for at least 24 hours post-extraction
  • Place an ice pack on the outside of your mouth
  • Stay on a soft food diet, which includes food like jelly, smoothies, and soups
  • Avoid strenuous activities that could dislodge the blood clots
  • Avoid rinsing your mouth or spitting for at least 12 hours post-extraction
  • Control bleeding by gently biting down on the gauze pads

FAQs

Initial discomfort should subside by the end of your first week post-procedure. It can generally take up to a few weeks for a full recovery, but this can vary from case to case. However, at With U Dental, we strive to ensure that you will be up and running in no time using our top-notch dental solutions.

There are a few steps we recommend you follow to make sure your wisdom tooth recovery goes smoothly.
  • Use an ice pack to reduce swelling after the procedure.
  • Avoid aggressively spitting out as this could dislodge the blood clot forming or affect the stitches.
  • We will recommend pain medicine for you to take at home.
  • Avoid doing anything too strenuous as this could interrupt the healing process.
  • Avoid drinking from a straw as the suction motion could dislodge the blood clot.
  • Do not brush your teeth or use mouthwash for the first 24 hours. When you do begin brushing your teeth, avoid brushing the surgical site.
  • After 24 hours have passed, gently use a salt water rinse every 2 hours and after meals to keep your mouth free of infection.
  • Avoid smoking for at least a week.

At With U Dental, we have techniques, facilities and technologies in place to help minimise pain and speed up your recovery. When you trust our experienced dental professionals, you’re investing in only the best for your smile.

You should stick to soft foods like soup, broth or pudding in the first few days following the procedure. You can gradually shift to harder foods, but we recommend avoiding anything hard, chewy, hot or spicy, as they can irritate your wound and ultimately cause complications. Drink plenty of water, but avoid alcohol or carbonated drinks for the first few days.

The length of your wisdom tooth removal procedure will depend on your individual case and if there are any complications. A straightforward wisdom tooth removal generally takes around 45 minutes or less per tooth.

We recommend fasting right before the procedure and avoiding alcohol for 24 hours prior. You’ll also need to arrange for someone to accompany you home after the procedure until the effects of the sedative wears off. Our dentist will further guide you through everything you need to know about your wisdom tooth removal before beginning treatment.

Depending on the complexity of the treatment and the patient’s preference, we have a range of sedation dentistry options performed by skilled dental clinicians that can be provided.

Since the treatment is usually performed under local anesthesia, you may be able to drive yourself home afterwards. However, we recommend arranging for someone to drive you home.

No, not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed. It depends on factors like the space in your mouth and the position of your teeth. Our dentist will assess your situation and recommend removal only if necessary.

Our experienced dentists may recommend removal if your wisdom tooth is causing you pain, crowding other teeth, causing infections or leading to other dental issues. Depending on your unique condition we will advise the best treatment option.

Not removing an impacted wisdom tooth can lead to pain, infection, damage to adjacent teeth and cyst formation. Removing them prevents these issues from arising.

Dry sockets occur after a tooth extraction. It is when the blood clot that forms to protect the underlying bone and nerves dissolves too soon. It’s important to follow our dentist’s instructions to prevent dry sockets from happening and promote healing.
